Left Side Abdominal Pain & Leg Pain

The left side of the abdomen is to the left of the imaginary line drawn from the left nipple to the navel, then down to the genitals. Many organs are housed in the area.

Organs found in this area include the left edge of the liver, the spleen the stomach, the sigmoid colon, the descending colon, and the left ovary and fallopian tube.  Pain and problems in this area could signify a related infection. 

Causes of Left Side Abdominal Pain & Leg Pain

Pain in the left side of the abdomen can be caused by a condition related to an organ housed there, or could be generalized from issues elsewhere.  Other possible causes include irritable bowel syndrome and constipation.

Symptoms of Left Side Abdominal Pain & Leg Pain

Symptoms often include cramping, bloating, nausea, and irregularity.  Pain in the legs sometimes accompanies theses symptoms due to the shared nerves.  It is common for the pain to generalize from abdomen to legs.

Abdominal pain with leg pain that persists longer than two or three days should see a physician.  An examination and tests such as blood tests and ultrasound can help the physician identify the condition causing the symptoms.

Treatments for Left Side Abdominal Pain & Leg Pain

Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include a change in diet, medication, or surgery.  Any treatments should be decided in consultation with a physician.
